Starting a non profit LLC
So you are interested in starting a non profit llc? Non profit businesses are set up differently from a for profit business, and knowing exactly how and what you need to do to incorporate and run your non profit llc.
The first thing you'll need to know is what exactly is a non profit company. The reasons a non profit is formed is for a particular religious, scientific research, literary, lobby, charity, or educational reasons. When you decide that you are going to be starting a non profit llc, you will need to designate the reason it will be a non profit business.
Just like any normal business, starting a non profit llc requires a laundry list of tasks that need to be taken care of. First off, what do you want your business name to be? The name you choose can reflect the reason of your non profit status, or just mean something special to you. You will need to check availability of the name prior to registering it, then register it with your state.
Incorporating your non profit as a LLC isn't much different from that of a normal LLC. While you are starting a non profit llc, the main different in your articles of incorporation that you have to file with the state is that you need to state the purpose of the non profit business. After that, it is pretty much the same as any other business.
There are other pieces of paperwork that must be filed, most notably your tax exempt paperwork. This must be turned in up to 15 months after your articles of incorporation are filed. Starting a non profit llc can be made infinitely easier by employing the use of incorporation services which handle most of the paperwork and legalities for you.
Another big advantage to starting a non profit llc is your eligibility for grants and donations. These grants can come from both public and private sources, and you can claim up to 50% income tax reduction from these donations. Non profit LLCs might not be for everyone, but it is an ideal setup for an incorporated non profit business.
